Executive Present: Doug G., George D., Tom C., Paul P., Jerry M., Bill B., Don S., Charlie C., Jerry B.
1. Tom C.: had to leave after the executive meeting.
2. Randy Tippen, the Conservation Officer for Lake Ontario/Erie Enforcement Unit for the MNR gave a presentation on Asian Carp and specifically about the problem of this invasive species getting into Lake Michigan through the rivers and canals connecting the Mississippi River to the Great Lakes. Asian Carp grow to 90 – 140 lbs. at maturity and eat half of their body weight a day. When they invade a waterway they dominate the live mass to a 95% level.
Randy wanted everyone to remember the enforcement tip hotline, and remember to specify the location to the operator (i.e. Lake Ontario):
1-877-TIPS-MNR
3. Percy: the MNR has the tracker supplied by the SCGFA and it is in good shape.
4. Paul P.: read the minutes from the November General meeting.
5. Bill B.: regarding the minutes, asked how we are going to fill the vacant Director’s position. Doug said he would address this later in the meeting.
6. Doug G.: Spring Derby: has been contacting sponsors; the sponsor list should be finalized by the Feb. meeting.
7. George D.: At both the Jan. and Dec. shore derbies, nothing was caught so the prizes were awarded by draws.
8. Bill B.: announced the change in the spring derbies that was agreed to at the executive meeting, i.e. no carryover of fish from the Spring Derby to the Member’s Derby. The Spring Derby ends at noon on June 12 and the Member’s Derby starts then. The reason for the rule change was conservation, members would not enter fish into the Spring Derby with the hope that they would at least be carried over onto the Member’s board.
9. Doug G: in recognition of our 80th anniversary as a club: one idea is to have commemorative watches or rings for the top angler in each of the 4 fish species categories. Also jackets (windbreakers) may be available for purchase.
10. New business: Jerry M: our insurance company and our accountants have made contributions towards our Pen Project.
Percy: requesting all anglers to check for lamprey marks on the fish they catch. [there was no discussion on how these checks would be tracked or the purpose of the checking and tracking]
Jim Arthur: donation to Kids Day received from Donna Leslie on behalf of Tommy Thorpe.
Doug G: regarding the vacant Director’s and President’s positions: he is willing to step up to become President and Don Shultz is willing to step up to fill his 1st VP position.
The following nominations were made for the positions:
>Director: Mary Shultz (accepted nomination)
>President: Jim Arthur (accepted nomination)
Herb: introduced a new member: Ernie M. who discussed the coyote problem in the Niagara farming community (ie their very large numbers), and the subsequent very low numbers of fox, grouse, pheasants, and jack rabbits.
11. 50/50 draw: won by Kurt Anderson: $40/$41
