General Meeting Minutes
Jan. 27, 2014
Present: Tom C., Paul P., Mary S., Dagmar M., Jerry M., Bruce M., Mark P.
1. Financials: Tom Copeland
- we have $54,245 in the bank
- along with fixed and other assets we have total assets of $86,286
- we have total liabilities and equity of $86,286; including $1,300 in a Brandon DeSantis prize
- our records have been submitted to our accountants for auditing
2. Kids Day Derby, May 3, 2014 (20th annual): Dagmar Miller
- expect about 500 kids plus parents for a total of 1000 people
- last few years we have had about 415 kids and a total of 800 people
- fishing on both sides of the channel
- will be handing out goodie bags with treats and coupons
- hot dogs and drinks for kids, parents can purchase for $2/hot dog & $1/drink
- volunteers receive free hot dog and/or pizza at noon
- 50/50 draw and a draw for 1 of 3 prizes; tickets for both draws will be 3 for $5.
- hoping for Worm Whanch for the worms
- Fire Dept., Police, Canadian Border Control (cannot come this year), Gamaru have been contacted
- still to contact MNR
- in process of getting permit
- have ordered large tent, will order portables next week
- instead of having 10 prizes in each category, plan to have only 6 and make them a little bigger
- the extra 20 rods and reels will be combined with the usual 50 to be given away in the kids draw
- will be ordering the rods and reels from either Peters Tackle or Grimsby Tackle in the next week
- we need at least 50 volunteers for the day, we usually get 20 or so students from the local high schools
- we need at least 5 volunteers the day before for set up

- COST FORECAST:
- have ordered t-shirts at a cost of $2,500 as it is our 20th annual Kids Day (Canadian Tire and 7-Eleven have sponsored the cost of the t-shirts
- have sent letter to CTC (Welland Ave.) hoping they will sponsor our bikes as they have in other years
- 7-Eleven will again be supplying coffee and we believe goodies for the volunteers, they did a awesome job last year
- Rankin Construction has donated $200
- our accountants plan to make a donation
- Mark’s wife’s company will make a donation for both the Salmon Derby and Kids Day Derby
- portables: $500
- tent (large): $500
- license: $100
- food: $500 (if not covered by donation)
- beverage: $300 (if not covered by donation)
- bikes (3): $500
- rods & reels (100): $1400
- Peters Tackle: $1000 (usually around $800 for prizes)
- misc. expenses: $800
- total about $5,600 : this could change depending on the support we get, could be less or more
- hopefully we will receive the same support from the public as last year and will then be able to have cash left over for the person taking over next year
- Dagmar needs a $500 float to cover expenses, approved, Tom will supply

3. Derby Committee: Mark Penner
- new derby committee: Mark P., John M., Chris H., Dave M., Steve J., Darryl D.
- have had a successful campaign for sponsors, including several new sponsors
- spring derby dates: Apr. 12 – June 7, 2014
- summer derby (not a member’s only derby): June 14 – Aug. 9
- member’s challenge derby to run concurrently with the spring and summer derbies; a fish can be entered in the regular derby or the member’s challenge, one or the other but not both
- some members have large boats and are willing to take out sponsors, especially those who normally don’t get a chance to salmon fish
- prize structure will be similar to last year with the addition of the member’s challenge prizes
- there will be a draw prize of a Scotty downrigger at the end of the fall derby
- other ideas under consideration:
- an awards banquet at the end of the year to hand out all the derby prizes; invite sponsors; it was pointed out that there is no budget to pay for this event
- a May long weekend tournament: enter 3 fish over the 3 days
- considering a new printer for the flyers & posters
- considering new derby tickets because of the change from a member’s derby
- Jordan Marina have advised that they would welcome a weigh scale, they have had anglers ask if they could weigh fish in there, Mark to get contact info
- Mark has inquired whether SCG&F members could receive a 10% discount at Peter’s Tackle

- BOWMANVILLE SYMPOSIUM
Date : Saturday March 15th 2014
Time : 12PM.- 4PM
At: Garnett B. Rickard Hall- Bowmanville Ontario.
We would like to extend an invitation to you regarding our upcoming Anglers Voice Symposium.
The purpose of this Symposium is to address our Ministry of Natural Resources pertaining to the Tributaries along the North shore of Lake Ontario in regards to enforcement and The Status of our Watersheds. Your presence is very much needed and appreciated in this very important endeavor.

- Colin Lake will hold a pen meeting to discuss 2014 projects and any changes.
Production target for Chinook has been exceeded at Normandale & the Salmon River (US) hatcheries. Coho production has fallen short and a decision may be made to supplement the shortfall with Chinook.
- There is a Lake Ontario stocking review meeting by the FMZ 20 (Lake Ontario) committee on February 22nd. Expenses covered by the MNR.
- February 18 to 25 there is a full science review of the Atlantic restoration initiative by world experts.
- Niagara Outdoors show in Fort Erie Sunday March 9th:
Selling used tackle to raise funds for tackle share
Accepting donations.
- OFAH Fish &Wildlife Conference at the Delta Meadowvale Resort March 13 to 15. Friday March 14th the grants will be presented at the dinner. Conference cost is $180 or $100 for Friday. Rooms available at the conference center for $120.
SCG&F will not participate
- Tackle Share – Target Lures donation to be auctioned to raise funds.

- a LIFE member of SCG&FA presented the club with a $1,000 donation

- Straight Line Anglers is hosting a Swap Meet on Sat. Feb. 1 at the Grimsby Legion
- on Fri., Jan. 31, Shane Tombs is giving a seminar on fishing with divers at Grimsby Tackle
7. Other Business: Trout Unlimited (Niagara Chapter)
- they are working on restoration of the upper 12 Mile Creek for the brook trout population
- they have a Provincial grant to convert several ponds from top drop dams to bottom drop dams to help the trout navigate the upper waterway
- they have a project ongoing with Healing Waters to help veterans fly fish in southern Ontario
8. Other Business: Bruce Miller
- asked if anyone knew the status of the ramp extension project: Rankin was going to install concrete slabs so that the ramps extended to the end of the docks
- Bruce to investigate
9. Other Business: Tom Copeland
- the following motions were presented and since they require changes to our bylaws, a minimum 15 members were required for the votes:
- the SCG&FA maintain a minimum bank balance of $20,000 to cover our fixed and variable expenses. PASSED by majority
- propose that general membership meetings be held 2x per year, in March and Sept. at the Royal Canadian Legion branch 350. After discussion an amendment was proposed to hold the general membership meetings 4x per year, in Jan., Mar., June and Sept. the President to call Executive/Director’s meetings as required. PASSED by majority.
