Many of you are aware that there is a significant number of wild Chinook Salmon occurring in Lake Ontario. One of these naturalized populations has set up at the Ganaraska River. These fish are somewhat different than the gene pool in the Credit River, where we regularly collect eggs for hatchery production. They appear to stage much earlier, with numerous runs throughout the fall. In the interest of capturing these favourable traits, the MNRF collected 100,000 eggs from the Ganny for a study. To distinguish them from the other Chinook, they are being fin clipped. And to this end, the Normandale Fish Culture Station could use some assistance.
The planned clipping dates are March 21,22 & 23. I will be going on Monday March 21 and have room for 5 other volunteers. If you are interested in joining me, please email me BY SATURDAY MARCH 12th at jerry.mitrovich@sympatico.ca. Details to follow but basically we will leave the clubhouse at 6:30am and return around 5:30pm. The trip is about 2 hours each way.
If you prefer to make your own arrangements on another day, please contact Steven McNevin A/Operations Supervisor Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry Lake Ontario Management Unit 41 Hatchery Lane, Picton, ON K0K 2T0 P:613-476-5968 steve.mcnevin@ontario.ca
This facility is new & state of the art, worth the visit to get up-to-date on how the MNRF raise the fish that are stocked. I hope to have some of you join me.
