General/Executive Meeting Minutes
June 27, 2016
Present: Mark P., Darryl D., Dave Morrison, Paul P., Mike S., Mary S., George D., Steve J., Tom C., Ken Y., Janet M., Bill B., Jerry M.
1. Kids Day Derby – Janet
- 300 kids attended this year with 76 fish entered
- no draw prizes this year
- Bob Izumi attended and talked to many of the kids
- Bass Pro supplied craft tables with attendants which were well used by the kids
- MNR had their display trailer with a couple of conservation officers
- the financial record book is not up to date at this time
- there was $500 in prizes left over to raffle off next year
- thanks to all the volunteers and sponsors
- social media was a big help to advertise the event
- Bass Pro also helped promote the event
2. Spring Derby – Darryl
- some excellent fishing this year
- 290 tickets sold which is up from last year
- up $2500 in sales from last year
- online: $3215 in sales, $112 in cost to sell online
- as usual Peter’s Tackle had most ticket sales
- sales at Grimsby Tackle were up from last year
3. 3x3 Derby – Mark & Darryl
- 53 boats entered, up from 33 last year
- 100% payout
- some boats come a long way to compete: Picton, Orillia, Kitchener
- the May long weekend was one of the best fishing weekends in memory
- for the future we need additional help at the ramp for weigh in
- we need to talk to the City for extra parking
- suggestion to have a leaderboard
- this derby is 100% SCG&F event
- we have not been tracking HST
4. Other
- Don: need better signage to mark IN/OUT at gates and to move across the street after to have come out of the water; Tom will get prices for signs
- we have replaced the freezer in the ramp shack
- we have replaced the pop machine in the ramp shack
- the yellow lines in the parking lot need painting: Steve volunteered to co-ordinate
- George will check with City regarding trucks that park across the road
- Janet: our outhouse has been locked when some people need it; it has been vandalized when left unlocked, there is a City outhouse down by the willow tree that is open
- we are hosting the OFAH meeting on Aug. 21, 9am – 2pm, no cost for lunch
- the awards presentation is Friday, Sept. 23 at the Legion
- the next meeting is Monday, Sept. 26.
5. Pens, tackle share: Jerry
- a review of the numbers stocked this year of each specie including 50,000 chinook in our pens, 30,000 rainbow, 45,000 browns, and 450 Atlantic
- all of the tackle has been serviced and a few more will be purchased
- tackle boxes were replaced
- Jerry will talk at the library about the service and fishing in Niagara
6. Presentation by Daniel Jang and Tom Stanton from the MNR Lake Ontario Management Unit on Salmon and Trout Identification
- best to use multiple identification features including mouth size and colour, tail and fin shapes, and spotting patterns
LAKE TROUT: light spots on a dark background, pale mouth, anal fin tip extends well past base when depressed, white leading edges of anal and pelvic fins, narrow caudal peduncle, deeply forked tail
CHINOOK SALMON: dark mouth with dark gums, both caudal fin lobes spotted, anal fin tip does not reach end of base when depressed, caudal rays smooth to the touch
COHO SALMON: dark mouth and pale gums, spots usually on upper lobes (can be both), anal fin tip just passes or almost reaches base when depresses, caudal rays rough to the touch
RAINBOW TROUT: pale mouth, radiating spots on caudal fin, anal fin tip extends well past base when depressed, slightly forked to square tail, thick caudal peduncle
BROWN TROUT: Pale mouth, maxilla extends beyond end of eye, few or no tail spots, anal fin tip extends well past base when depressed, heavily spotted with many spots below lateral line, square tail to slightly forked, thick caudal peduncle
ATLANTIC SALMON: Pale mouth, maxilla extends to back of eye, forked tail usually has no spots on tail, anal fin tip extends well past base when depressed, few large spots on head, x shaped spots, few spots below lateral line, narrow caudal peduncle
CHINOOK VS. COHO SALMON: teeth black vs grey, anal fin: ½ way when folded up vs. to the end, tail well spotted vs. very few
ATLANTIC SALMON VS. BROWN TROUT: spots all over vs. spots above lateral line, maxilla extends to back of eye vs. extends beyond end of eye
