Minutes October 27, 2008
Doug Gauthier absent due to illness, Bruce Downs unable to attend
The next regular meeting will be November 24th, 2008 at 7:30. Scheduled speaker on Chinook Salmon pen imprinting is Al Van Dusen.
Treasurer, Tom Copeland;
- There is a bank balance of $23,958.98 with outstanding liabilities of $5,864.93. The balance increased $12,000 over 2007.
- liabilities are comprised of the Kid’s Day fund at $4,504.39, $1,300.00 Fall Derby Big Fish prize, and $60.54 GST owing
- 2008 daily ramp pass income increased over 2007
- 2008 memberships remained on par with 2007
- there will not be any planned expenditures pending the Port Tower decision and the related property lease renewal terms
- approximately $1000.00 for dock repairs is the only outstanding non-fixed expense
- The club should plan on a regular bank balance of $20,000 to deal with non-budgeted expenses
Bill Ball, reporting for the 1st Vice President, Doug Gauthier,
- A number of changes have been made to the Spring Derby (these are unofficial until confirmed with Doug’s minutes of the derby committee)
• Spring Derby April 18 to June 13 (8 weeks), member’s derby April 18 to July 11 (12 weeks)
• Ticket prices will be $35 single, $40 family, and a boat ticket for $175.00
• There will be 5 cash prizes per category
• Minimum weight for trout categories will be 10 lbs
• Weight stations will be open their regular business hours
• Shortwave marine will be a ticket outlet/weigh station on the north shore in Port Credit with another site yet to be confirmed
• All fish weighed will be tagged and “rodded”
• A pre-derby seminar is being planned, the revival of a popular event
- Fall Derby prizes were awarded to:
1st Mark Elliot 31lb 8oz 2nd Dave Hill 30lb 0oz 3rd Mark Elliot 29lb 8.5oz
4th Jerry Mitrovich 28lb 15oz 5th Dave Hill 28lb 10oz 6th Marc Heaton 28lb 6.5oz
2nd Vice President, Paul Groves
- Tom Copeland covered the ramp pass fee schedule: daily remains at $10.00 per calendar day, $20.00 for three consecutive calendar days to cover weekend derbies, out-of-town visitors, seasonal pass $110.00 with a club membership
- the “seasonal” $20.00 for boaters with slips has been eliminated
- a prorated seasonal fee to be determined for late season boaters or new area residents
- dock removal will be Saturday November 1 at 7:30; anyone available to assist with fall cleanup are asked to leave a message at 905-937-6335
General
- Brandon Desantis highlighted the launch of “One Day Derbies” Sunday November 30 2008, this year with a two tier “Big Fish” prize sure to attract more anglers
- Brandon thanked Paul Groves for his donation of $150.00 to cover the $30.00 usage fee for the clubhouse
- Mark Elliot graciously recognized the efforts of the volunteers that support the club activities
- Jerry M. confirmed the departure of BassMasters
- Herb provided farm and landowner updates:
• reiterated “pigeon” investment fiasco reported in past months
• raised the incident of SPCA investigating horse abuse in the Sudbury area which has signs of a “land grab”
• Herb was not convinced of the potential when approached by Pheasants Forever to plant specific grasses to improve habitat
• Herb highlighted deer patterns in relationship to the abundance of standing corn; they will follow rows or drainage ditches avoiding crossing through corn rows which creates more noise to reveal their presence
• An Ontario Bill correlating animal suffering with a poor kill will erode hunters rights
- Doug Ferrier commented on the low numbers of salmon in the canal. Fish manage to invade the waterway by way of lock lifts.
- Dawn Ferrier reminded us of the recent loss of past member and executive Denise Wormald. Motioned by Doug Ferrier, seconded by Bruce Miller and passed, it was agreed for the club to make a $30.00 donation to the Diabetes Foundation in memory of Denise
- To date Tom Copeland, Bill Ball, Bruce Miller and Jerry Mitrovich have committed to cleaning the clubhouse the week of November 17th in preparation for the November 24th meeting
- Tom will arrange for coffee for November 24th
- Jerry M. reminded the group of need to volunteer for Ringwood
- Tom will arrange for the exterior ice chest to be removed
- Kid’s Fishing Day will be May 2nd
- passed, a donation of a season ramp pass for a draw prize to the Joe Montgomery Ice Fishing seminar Dec. 4th
- passed, a tippence of $100.00 for next meeting’s speaker
- Jerry M. recognized the extra efforts of Tom C. to the electrical heating repairs
- Percy McKay continues to be a regular 50/50 draw by claiming this month’s take of $45.50.
After the meeting:
With Ringwood Culture Station heading into a heavier work schedule with maturing eggs and it requires assistance from volunteers.
