General/Executive Meeting Minutes
Jan. 23, 2017
Present: Mark P., Dave Martin, Darryl D., Dave Morrison, Paul P., Mary S., George D., Mike D., Ken Y., Janet M., Bill B., Jerry M.
1. Mark P. : President’s opening remarks
- mostly a planning meeting tonight for our 2017 activities
- at our March meeting we will have a guest speaker, probably speaking on salmon trolling
- because of the large attendance, Mark introduced the executive and the board of directors
- Mark thanked the crew for their work to take the docks out in Oct.
- Mark thanked the crew (Dave, Randy, Mike, Chad) for their work in the repairing of dock 4
- what date should we put the 3 docks back in the water? Bruce will call Gilbert in early March to determine his availability; Paul will call the usual crew with the details
- what dates should we have the property clean up?
- ramp operations: we need volunteers to fill a few gaps and relieve the regulars when they are not available; at the March meeting we will go over the ramp schedule
2. Janet M.: Kids Day Derby
- the derby will be Sat., May 6, 2017
- the committee is contacting sponsors now
- Janet would like each member to acquire 1 new sponsor
- we sold a record amount of food & drink in 2016 with a profit of $700
- we are trying to get more of the supplies for free this year
- can we get the worms for free or at least at a discount? Tony knows a wholesaler who he will contact
- can we do more advertising of the derby in local businesses?
- our goal is to get 500 kids out to participate
- our goal for the 50/50 draw is $300 for the derby
- a question was raised about parking on the grassy knoll at the end of our parking lot: Janet will check
- Mark Defoy (Niagara Fishing Assassins): runs a derby (Feb. 18) to raise money for Kids Day: would like the clubhouse to be open. George D. will open the clubhouse from 6am – 5pm. Randy will organize the selling of burgers and hot dogs near the end of the derby
3. Jerry M.
Pen Project:
- 50,000 last year will increase to 60,000 this year
- 8% survival rate from pens vs. 4% if direct stocked
- alewife population has lost 2 years due to 2 harsh winters
- salmon do not feed on goby or other prey fish (just mainly alewife)
- charter guys did not want the 20% stocking reduction of salmon and lake trout
- Randy: discussed salmon problems in Lake Michigan
- if we have more fish in pens, then less will go to direct stock (1:2)
- 2019 could have a salmon crash due to poor alewife numbers
- natural wild reproduction of salmon is 50%
- next meeting to discuss stocking is Feb. 5
- rainbow stocking in spring 2017 is 30,000
- browns had 45,000 stocked in 2016
- the naturally reproduced salmon from the Ganaraska river have been more robust than those from the Credit, so some eggs will be used from the Gany to produce the fry for the pens
Tackle Share:
- Peter’s and Grimsby will have barrels to collect donations
- the Fort Erie Outdoor show is Mar.12 where the donations will be sold to subsidize the program
OFAH Conference:
- Mar. 17-18: Jerry and Tom plan to go, all expenses are paid for
- our 4 year commitment of a bursary to students @ $2000/yr. will end this year
- a motion was raised to stop our bursary sponsorship to students through OFAH and explore ideas for use of this money in house: passed
Fly tying:
- the group meets Thursday evenings at the clubhouse
- may try fly casting this year
Lease renewal:
- new 5 year lease provides access for our pen project
Use of Legion:
- the Legion will be given 3 months notice to vacate the building
- we will then need to find a new location for our meetings

- 2016 derby total income: about $26,600
- 2016 gross profit $51,780
- 2016 total expenses $38,997
- 2016 net income $12,782
5. Darryl D.
- 2016: 21% year/year increase in derby entries
- decision to increase top prizes
- signing up new sponsors now: include Pesca spoon and Bass Pro Shop
- more prizes will also go to the Junior division
- early bird prize: Scotty downrigger
- George: post derby results in the ramp shack
- dates for derbies:
Spring: Apr. 8 – Jun. 3
Summer: Jun. 10 – Aug. 5
Fall: Aug. 12 – Sept. – 16
3x3 Tournament: May 20 – 22
- fixed payout: $1000/$600/ $400
- there will also be some prizes handed out
- 1 rule change: fish must be weighed in on same day caught
- BBQ: Monday p.m.: to raise money: need permit to sell food: Janet can help
- Dave: need volunteers to weigh fish other than the ramp volunteers

- new website in progress by Future Access: should be done late Feb.
- we will keep old message board
- there will be web pages for each of the activities we do
- you will be able to buy tickets and get a receipt
- we will have a memorial page for past members: need committee
- there will be Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages for the club
- what is the benefit of being a member of SCG&FA?: BBQ in summer for members at no cost; John M. cooks pigs at his house; Sat. Aug. 26? Also day for Catch the Fry Tournament; last year we had 44 family members and 127 single members; most in favour of BBQ
7. Jerry
- each executive should be assigned the responsibility for finding a successor to be trained
- looking to put minnow traps at 4 Falls to confirm chinook reproduction there
8. Other
- we should have a handout at the ramp as to what it is that the SCG&F does
- we need better signs at the ramp regarding parking and packing up your boat
- is there a way to advertise our derbies in the papers or radio?
- Randy: what would be the cost of flyers to deliver with the paper?
- Jerry: we can get a single ad in the Niagara This Week, they post sponsors around the ad
- we need a new design of our leaderboard to make it easier to change the standings: Darryl will work on
- Mark: since we are both GAME and Fish, we are open to anything related to hunting; Jerry: Grimsby Tackle has section on hunting with crossbows
- Bruce: old telephone cable needs taken down because it is loose: Mike D. will cut it
- garbage cans have been put away for the winter because they were blowing around
Mark: Jr. Bassmasters are still using the clubhouse on Tues.
