As another year gets underway we are asking for volunteers on the Chinook Pen Imprinting Project.
For the program to run smoothly 7 individuals are required, one per day. I have already received commitments from 3 of last year’s team covering off Monday (Darryl), Tuesday (Steve) and Douglas (Friday). I will be mentoring Lyle to chair the project after this year, as such we don’t count towards the team of 7.
As information, the pens require daily service by 9:00 am. Responsibilities include replenishing all the feeders, cleaning one pen as per the schedule with the exception of two on Sunday and recording observations. Observations may be damaged equipment, dead fry, unusual water conditions, etc. All necessary supplies are on site in a truck box.
Most days a volunteer will be done in one hour or less. With the fry only held for 4 weeks, that equals a commitment of 4 hours (plus your personal travel time). Any further assistance you can offer in the installation and removal of equipment, and the delivery and release of the fry would be greatly appreciated. The equipment is installed some time in the last week of March or the first week of April to be ready for the delivery of 60,000 fry by mid April.
Circumstances have necessitated moving the project to the Port Dalhousie Pier Marina, which should be as secure and convenient as our original location by Lincoln Fabrics. The only negative will be the distance to “bucket” the fry delivery.
A few guidelines, subject to change, that will be strictly enforced include:
- all volunteers must be SCG&F club members to ensure liability coverage
- the minimum age of volunteers is 18
- no guests allowed under any circumstances
We are marking our 10th year of nurturing Chinook fry to improve the over-all Lake Ontario fishery, especially the fall runs in Port Dalhousie Harbour. To be a part of this team please contact Jerry at jerry.mitrovich@sympatico.ca
