On Saturday, July 7 the Decew Gun Club will host it's 3rd "Shoot for Abbi" charity fundraiser in support of cystinosis
research. To date the club has raised approximately $15,000 in contributions to find a cure for this disease.
Abbi Monaghan is 12 years old and living with cystinosis, a rare disease for which there is currently no cure. Because cystinosis is such a rare disease (as far as we know Abbi is the only person in the Niagara Region with it) there is little government funding so most money raised for cystinosis research is done through private efforts such as this one.
You can assist us by doing the following:
1) Forward the attached poster to your friends and relatives and ask them to do the same. Place the posters in businesses that will allow them.
2) If you belong to other gun or conservation clubs please forward this information to them so they can post it on their bulletin boards and websites.
3) Put the attached poster on your personal Facebook pages and any other social media sites
4) Buy a ticket on our grand prize, a $1200 Weber barbeque. Tickets are only $5 and are available from Director John Rakich at: jpr@startmail.com
5) Volunteer to help out at the shoot. We are in need of help with the following:
a) For a maximum of safety we require 8-10 firing line safety instructors.
b) Assistance with the parking lot, registration, serving food, etc.
c) Help setting up and tearing down the tents and shelters.
Even if you can assist us for a couple of hours that would be greatly appreciated.
At the previous shoots we have had wonderful support from our members and other area clubs in the form of donations. Some of the donated items included cases of water, pop and other food, items that were suitable as door prizes and also ammunition for the shooters. Donations and sponsorships are gratefully accepted. Please contact me if you are interested in donating.
Come out and bring the family. Children are encouraged to participate. Don't have a gun? Never shot before? Not a problem. We will have guns and plenty of ammunition.
Concerned about safety? Did you know that shooting is one of the safest of all sports? As long time shooters, we realize that you might be concerned about bringing your children to an event like this. Safety is our business and we will have many instructors to ensure that everyone has a safe, fun day. There will be lots of prizes including a raffle for a $1200 Weber barbeque, a BBQ and a 50-50 draw.
The entry fee is $20 payable at the door (all proceeds go to cystinosis research). Included in the admission fee are 2 targets, (one practice, one elimination) and a hamburger or hot dog and beverage. Shooters can better their score by purchasing an additional target and 10 rounds of ammunition for $5.00.
For those bringing their own rifles, this is a 22LR rifle match, fired at bingo targets from sitting benches. These are random score targets so if you can hit the paper you have a chance to win. Adults and children will have separate sections. Any firearm action is permitted that requires the shooter to take their finger off the trigger to chamber another round (i.e. bolt, lever etc.). NO SEMI AUTOS.
Last year we raised over $8000 at this event and hope to do even better this year.
You are invited to "Shoot for Abbi".
When: Sat. July 7, 2018, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm (rain date Saturday July 14)
Where: Decew Gun Club, 3042 Cataract Road, Thorold, ON, CANADA L0S 1E6 (www.decewgunclub.com)
While participants can pay at the door, to ensure that there is plenty of food for everyone we are encouraging people to pre-register. The following is the website for registration. There is also a downloadable promo poster on this website. whoozin.com/shootforabbi
Here is Abbi’s Facebook page. - www.facebook.com/AbbisRoad2006/
Not only does this shoot raise money for a very worthy cause but it also generates a great deal of excellent public relations for the sport. Past shoots have generated good media coverage and some local politicians have also attended so this is an opportunity to showcase recreational shooting in a positive light.
Once again, if you can assist us in any capacity please contact Director John Rakich ASAP and let him know you are willing to pitch in to make this event a huge success.
Thank you for your help and we hope to see you on July 7th!
