Summery greetings to all!
Despite the threat of a slow economy and tight personal budgets, we started this year full of optimism.
Kid's Day Fishing Derby was well supported financially and by the weatherman. Everyone that participated or worked the event had a great day. While it is difficult to identify the reasons for reduced registrants, there is a quiet consensus that the Standard article on the closing of the Catfish Derby played a significant role in confusing the general public and business supporters. The reference to the "Port Dalhousie derby"
being terminated in the article negatively impacted our attendance. Lower numbers than planned did not deter from a quality run event due to the energy of Dagmar Miller and the volunteers she brought to her team. Her efforts were recognized by a new sponsor, Kid's Cops and Canadian Tire, that work with the Bob Izumi Foundation. They were thrilled with the format and venue, dubbing Kid’s Day a class event. To ensure you are part of an ongoing special celebration mark May 1st on your 2010 calendar.
Increasing the cost of a Spring Derby ticket in conjunction with an improvement to the prize structure promises a favourable outcome for 2009. Hopefully a stronger 2010 will help us mark our 80th with a memorable event, especially in view of the new sponsors that have stepped up to provide quality prizes. I cannot stress enough the importance of favouring the services and products of these businesses to promote growth of our relationship.

This year is an election year with nominations accepted at the September meeting. If you have not done so in the past, consider becoming more active in the club and taking a direct role in determining our future direction and activities.
On a closing note, I put forth this challenge to all SCG&F members. Bring one new member to the club in 2010. This commitment will provide a resource for ideas and a larger pool of individuals to support club initiatives. With a campaign total of at least 40 new members before January 1, 2010, every non-family new member will get you a ticket in a free draw for a half day charter for a party of four on Lake Ontario! Ensure your name and membership # are printed on the new member’s stub.
This generous prize is provided by Joe O’Donnell of Natural Wonders Angling Adventures. Joe’s proven success record and bubbly personality will ensure an experience of a lifetime.
