Last year the club sought input from the angling community to assist with potential changes to the St. Catharines Game & Fish Annual Spring Salmon Derby. While we recognize that you cannot please everyone, it was important to find out what opportunities to improve the event could be addressed. Post on this thread or PM me your suggestions. Derby dates? Length of derby? Format? Prize structure? Thank you in advance. Cheers, Jerry

Start the derby on April 10, 2010. This allows the people that do not have access to a boat time to ply their trade on the shoreline, streams, harbours, and piers. Finishing time on main and members derbies is okay. Salmon is still number one and the best to catch and award. Brown Trout have not been weighed in and does not deserve a seperate category. Combine the Rainbow and Brown Trout category and the prize stucture together. Make this even more appealing to all the people who fish in their secret spots. This will tempt more non-boat fishermen to enter and bring back the non resident fishermen who come here also for a vacation and tempt them to enter our derby. If any changes can be looked at it would be to decrease the Lake Trout category and prize stucture to less than the Salmon and Rainbow/Brown category. I am sure if you increase the prize structure in a combined Rainbow/Brown trout category, you will attract more entrants and memberships. The only other main way to grow and for families to have a memory is to build upon the youth today in the Kid's Fishing Derby. Advertise on radio, newspapers, flyers and bulletins in all Fishing Stores where available. It would be nice to see sponsorship from a local Television station via the nightly news. They could do a blurb like the one they did with Mayor Hazel. In the blurb, they could mention the Pen Imprinting Project also. The news is always looking for stories and a day set aside just for the Kid's and their families is something special.

I would like to see the browns removed and the prize structure changed so that there would be enough excess to run a $100.00 a day for salmon over 25 pounds to be run after the member's derby and before the fall derby.
It could be done the same as the salmon masters was just with a smaller prize structure.

Dennis There is trophy Brown within a half mile of your dock that wants on the leader board next spring. I do like the idea of a progressive jackpot type prize.

Contact Salmon Master's Derby Chairman and find out why this derby has failed each time. My thought is that there is not enough entrants to support this idea. I am sure that there will not be enough entrants also for a "Boat Only" derby to run in the Spring. The only way a Salmon Derby can be held is after the main derby. The current format of the Main Derby ending and a Member's Derby following is working fine. The fish that do not place in the main derby carry over to the Member's Derby. Alot of people have different day's that they can fish due to work, vacation time and family. This allows people time to fish and not just certain days or time. The reduction in Lake Trout derby places with a minimum weight would reduce the harvest of this species. With the combining of the Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout, this still allows both species to place in the derby. With the combining of both these, this allows for a higher award for the winners which will attract more entrants and members. Advertising is done alot by members and this would surely go through the grape vine very quickly and alot of old members and fishermen would come back. I am sure there is alot more people with thoughts on this subject. I would really like to hear them. Log on and either post it or send me a message. Thx, Rob!

I have searched out the results of the scg&f derbies and find that the money is already there for a $100.00 a day derby that can be run after the member's derby and prior to the fall derby. All that would be changed is eliminating the browns from the spring derby and member's derby. Salmon Masters was successful last year but according to emails received the economy stopped many sponsers from coming on board this year.
A 100 dollar a day is a respectable payout and is far below the 500 a day for the salmon masters.
I have contacted about 8 of the guys who fish out of our marina and they would be all for it.
I like you would like to hear more feed back from other members.
