General Meeting Minutes
Nov. 22, 2010

1. DougG:
- received cheque for $1000 from WFN, which we have allocated to Kids Day
- next year we should become more involved and compete for a major prize, by maintain our standard and promoting our club through the WFN website: ***www.wfn.com***: secretary note: website should be www.wfn.tv
- we will open the floor later to discuss the proposed changes to the derbies
- our Pot Luck dinner will be Dec. 6, starting between 5:30 – 6:00 pm
- volunteers are needed on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 1:00pm to help decorate for the pot luck dinner
2. TomC: Treasurer’s Report (4 pages attached)
- our net income is down about $500 in 2010
- we have a little over $30,000 in the bank: proposing to invest $10,000 in short term (6 months) deposit which will earn some interest: motion made: voted: carried
3. DonS.:
- we have installed a dart board in the club house for members to play. There is a charge of $1/day to use the board. Members must bring their own darts. A group will be getting together on Tuesdays at 7pm
4. JasonP:
- the 1-day derby held on Nov. 7 had 45 anglers with 18 of them entering the $20 pot
- 1st prize: Cindy Adams (1st female winner): 11 lb 7 oz brown trout: $810 prize, and she then donated $100 to Kids Day
- 2nd prize: John Rabchuck: 8 lb 6 oz rainbow trout (2 tied with same weight, John weighed in earlier)
- the day raised $102 for Kids Day, between the BBQ and the 50/50 draw
- next 1-day derby will be Dec. 5
5. JerryM:
- the US Fish & Wildlife Service are conducting a lake trout survey in Lake Ontario and are asking all anglers, if they catch a lake trout with a radio transmitter tag, to release the fish immediately.
- Marion Daniels, a biologist with the MNR, has advised that there will be no changes to the pen projects on the lake in 2011, with the exception that we will get 10,000 more fry, since that approval had already been given before the ban on changes was announced
- Jerry has been added to the fish management advisory group for Lake Ontario
- on Nov. 30 there is a public meeting in NOTL regarding water treatment plants. They cannot handle extra volumes of water.
- what happens to drugs thrown in toilets or washed down drains?
- what happens to overflow water?
- what happens when equipment breaks down?
- Jerry will be attending the meeting on behalf of SCG&F: anyone else want to go?
- there will be a salmon/trout symposium on Apr. 9, 2011 in Port Credit at the Waterside Inn
- a professor has been invited to speak
- it is a public information session on the Lake Ontario environment
- there will be a maximum seating available of about 300
- if there is a strong interest from our club we could get the MNR to come to our club and discuss the issues sometime in 2012
- July 3, 2011 has been declared vets of Afghanistan Day
- the organizers will have boats available to take vets out fishing (probably charter boats)
- they may be asking our club to support the day in some way
- Ringwood hatchery will not be needing our help until Jan. when they will need volunteers to sort through eggs and pick out the bad ones
- Jerry would like the club to start a library of fishing equipment that would be available to loan out, mostly to kids
- asked for a volunteer to organize and head up this library: both Larry Darbyson and Bill Ball volunteered
- also asked for the donation of equipment to stock the library. If any donated equipment is not suitable for the lending program, it could be sold and the money used to help fund the library
- we are still in need of a champion to improve our hunting mandate and to bring hunters back to the club: names suggested were Dan Andrews and Larry Schroeder
6. Percy:
- the MNR has our radio tracking device; can we ask for it back to do our own tracking?
- Jerry M: the MNR has provided diaries this year and will again next to track salmon. They are also looking at nose implants in order to develop sound science behind any decisions they make. The MNR will be using our trailer at Normandale when Ringwood is finished with it.
- is the MNR collecting lamprey data like they used to?
7. Mark (Straight Line Anglers)
- Steelhead Derby: Queenston Boat ramp, $20 per person, Dec. 11, 2010 (was tentatively Dec. 4 at meeting): more info on the website: www.straitlineanglers.com/NiagaraRiverSteelheadDerby.htm
- the SLA club meets the first Wed. of every month, everyone is welcome
8. Percy:
- recommended that Herb S. be given a Life Membership to the SCG&FA: motioned:voted:carried
9. Discussion regarding the proposed changes to the fishing derbies in 2011
- there was a lively discussion regarding the proposed changes: in general almost everyone who spoke was against the changes, in particular most wanted the trout categories kept in some form
- many wanted the prizes spread over more fishermen, say 10 in each category instead of 6.
- most did not want the 1st place prize to increase or it would attract the big boat tournament fishermen
- JerryM gave a summary of the Lake Ontario trout fishery, which acted as a basis for the derby committee proposed changes
- based on our club mandate of conservation, maybe we need an education program on the proper techniques to release a fish
- we need to promote our derby better to increase the number of anglers, maybe jumpstart the derby by having something special on the opening weekend
- we need to ensure all derby anglers know the weights of the fish on the board and that fish smaller than those on the board should be released
