St. Catharines Game & Fish Association
General Meeting Minutes
January 24, 2011
Present: Executive: Tom C., Paul P., Bill B., Jerry M., Brandon D., John M., Paul A.
Members: Dan A., Larry D., Brian Beckwith, Jim MacKay
The attendance was not sufficient for a quorum to be an official meeting.
In the absence of Doug G., Don S. and George D., Jerry M. chaired the meeting:
1. Tom C.: financial report (3 pages); waiting for the December bank statement to submit the clubs accounts to the auditor.
2. Past president Mel McPherson passed before Christmas
3. Don Schultz had a heart attack before Christmas and had a quadruple bypass. Mary needs your well wishes.
4. Doug Gauthier underwent vascular surgery Saturday. Recovering on 4th floor. Shirley needs your well wishes.
5. Lease renewal update from January 18th meeting with Dave Macklem:
1. request for extension to April 30, 2012 to coincide with Federal head lease
2. Dave is in agreement with current conditions and rate, with amendment to include “use” of Snug Harbour for pen project
3. Dave supports 4 X 5 year terms on renewal
4. there are not any plans for city use of our east parking lot
5. Get letter signed
6. Feed the Fry tournament May 14th, expect blast off at 6:00. This is a major fund raiser for the pen project and requires “extra” club support to handle early traffic and a lunch barbecue (more funds).
7. Ramp volunteers – suggest some additional help due to Don and Doug being of poor health
Would also like to see reno done to accommodate tackle loan program
Any opinions on “cycling station”? City/CTC sponsored. Good PR and may boost drink sales. Brandon: there is a bicycle fix-it location at Secord and Lake.
8. Tackle loan program – good start; Larry Darbyson waiting for OFAH program outline; ramp attendants will have to be “trained” on program.
9. Update fire extinguishers, first aid kits. Tom C.: extinguishers were inspected in 2010.
Suggestion: fire extinguisher service day to include boaters
10. VHF radio course ? some interest: how was DYC trainee?
11. THANK YOU to Fern Stewart, Bruce Miller, Evan Bearss, Joe O’Donnell for joining me on the Ringwood volunteer work trip. We processed about 130,000 fry.
12. Speakers for upcoming meetings:
1. February – Marion Daniels update on Lake Ontario fish population
2. March – antique fishing tackle appraisals and insight
13. Pen dock extension configuration input?
14. Salmon Derby:
1. sponsors
2. rules & prizes: reduce 1st place in Salmon category from $3000 to $2000; eliminate bottom 2 places in trout category
Dates: Spring: Apr. 16 – June 11
Members: June 12 – July 30
Fall: Aug. 13 – Sept. 24
3. daily updates (web site and printout at ramp)
4. distribution date for tickets
5. advertising – handouts/newspaper/businesses
6. Niagara Outdoors Show March 12th – tickets, new flyer, fly tying demo
7. Derby committee meeting: Friday, January 28, 10 am
15. Other business:
1. Dan A.: should we have a box for scrap fishing line on either side of the harbor; would need City approval; would have to be metal – a 5 gal. pail would do; we could put our logo on the pail
2. Paul A.: Lake Ontario Winter Trout Derby results: (had 10 entries)
- 1st place: Geoff Way, 15 lb 6.5 oz brown trout, $185
- 2nd place: Paul A., 12lb 12oz rainbow trout, $74
- made $111 for the Club’s general fund
3. Bill A.: Hey guys I was just reading on NFN that Bowen is hoping someone will run his annual ice fishing derby on Martindale Pond/Rene Park. This sounds like something the SCGF Executive might want to look into. It's a charity event for Heart and Stroke held in the name of Bradley Perzul who died during a heart surgery. He was also a winner in the Lake Trout division of our derby.
If anyone would like to run this derby it would help maintain a level of participation within our angling community in the region. Please contact Bowen Sandercock or add to the thread where it was organized last year: www.niagarafishing.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=18681
Even if you would like to organize this yourself please be sure to let the guys at NFN know to avoid duplication.
