Despite the change from Ringwood to Normandale for Chinook production, volunteers are still welcome and needed to ensure continued success with the Lake Ontario Chinook stocking program.
Egg collection will begin October 3rd and likely continue for a two week period Monday to Friday only. Our club members have been volunteering since the inception and this year should be no different. Support from clubs that have pen projects such as ours, makes this effort even more meaningful.
There will be a signup sheet at the general meeting Monday September 26th, but an earlier commitment would be most helpful for the MNR to plan and schedule their work.
A brief outline for those unfamiliar with the project.
Chinook egg collection takes place in Streetsville on the Credit River.
Access is provided on Kraft private property, so some basic rules include:
ALL VOLUNTEERS must be preregistered by the MNR. You cannot just show up.
A minimum age requirement of 18 for their insurance coverage.
Absolutely no peanuts or products containing peanuts is permitted on the property. They are a food processing facility certified peanut free.
There will be a quantity of loaner chest waders, but it is best to bring your own if possible.
Landing nets and arm-long protective gloves are provided.
Bring beverages and a lunch/snack as preferred. The day usually ends around 1:30 dependent on weather and available fish. MNR staff still have to transport the eggs to the hatchery and process them, so their work day is fairly long.
Check weather reports and bring rain gear if required. The work goes on unless dangerous conditions occur, as fish continue to make the spawning run regardless.
Traditionally St. Catharines area members have left the club ramp at 8:00 am to arrive on site about an hour later. Out of town members can make appropriate arrangements based on their location.
Volunteers can use this thread to organize car pools and volunteer as a group for a specific day. Prior to September 26th, please contact John Sager directly at john.sager@ontario.ca with a copy to me, jerry.mitrovich@sympatico.ca.
If you have a friend, fisherman or not, club member or not, encourage them to join you for an enlightening experience.
