General Meeting Minutes
Sept. 26, 2011
Present: Jerry M., Paul P., George D., Bill B., Joe M., Charlie C.
O Canada
1. Our guest speaker, Marion Daniels, from the MNR had to cancel her presentation for tonight due to a work scheduling conflict. She has rescheduled for Oct. and plans to be accompanied by Andy Todd. They will update us at that time on the management issues regarding Lake Ontario.
They have proposed to sponsor a seminar in the spring of 2012 in the Niagara area similar to the one held in Port Credit earlier this year.
2. Financial Report – JM (11 pages attached)
Current book bank balance: $34,001.11
Kids Day allocation balance: $6,713.04
Pen project allocation balance: $3,112.55
Outstanding liabilities (fall derby cash payout, etc.): $3,456.64
Working balance: $20,718.88
3. Spring & Members Derby – JM
An analysis of the derbies was presented comparing the 2011 and the 2010 years. In general, participation in the derbies was down about 30% this year from 2010, and the SCG&FA had to subsidize the derbies by about $8,000. The new incoming executive will have to decide if this amount of subsidizing is acceptable.
4. Ramp Operations - JM & GD
Although the final numbers are not known yet, the ramp was used much less in 2011 than in 2010, resulting in much less revenue for the club. The ramp is our main source of revenue.
Jerry thanked the many volunteers who gave of their time to man the ramp, including: Mary & Don Schultz, Tom Copeland, Bill Ball, Paul Paulin, Dave Hill, Fern Stewart, Bruce Miller, Angela Gauthier, & George Deliman.
5. Dock Removal
The proposed date for the removal of 3 of the 4 docks is Saturday, Oct. 15. It usually takes about 2 hours and requires 3-4 volunteers. One dock will be left in the water over the winter as per usual.
6. Election Year
Elections for executive positions in the SCG&FA will be held in November, 2011. Nominations for the 15 positions (President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, & 10 Directors), can be made at the Sept. & Oct., 2011 meetings. JM asked that if a member is considering a nomination, that you speak to the nominee first, giving them time to consider the nomination before the meeting.
7. Fall Derby
The participation in the 2011 Fall Derby was the lowest in the past 4 years:
2011: 51 entries
2010: 65 entries
2009: 77 entries
2008: 71 entries
This year’s winner is Aaron Duncan with a 32 lb. 5 oz. Chinook. Aaron’s prize is $825 cash. Second place goes to Rob Faragalli with a 28 lb. 9 oz. Chinook. Rob wins a selection of Stinger lures donated by Rob Chamberlain.
Recognition was given to Jason Watts who caught and released a 33 lb. lake trout. (weight was estimated by MNR staff). JM presented Jason with a SCG&FA 80th Anniversary cap.
8. Chinook Diaries
JM is collecting the diaries which will be returned to the MNR for analysis of the data. Rob C. will get his diary to Jerry.
9. Tackle Share Program
All of the tackle for the loaning program is ready to go. The launch of the program has been delayed until the logistics of loaning and collecting the equipment has been sorted out. The original intent was to use the ramp volunteers to manage the loaning/collecting but this would require the volunteers to be at the ramp whenever tackle was to be loaned or collected. At present, when the weather is not conducive to boating, the volunteers have the option of not being at the ramp. The club is asking for any ideas on how this program could be managed.
10. Egg collection
Volunteers are needed to help collect Chinook eggs at the Credit River on Tuesday, Oct. 4 or Wed. Oct. 5. (Norm C. and Bruce M. agreed to go. Bruce would ask Fern S.)
11. Ice Fishing Seminar – JM
Will be held Wednesday, December 7.
General admission will be $15, but only $12 for members of SCG&FA
In the past, too much time was spent handing out small prizes, so this year there will be fewer prizes but they will be bigger (some will be worth $500 - $600). There will be 3 speakers with experience ice fishing on Lake Nipissing.
12. Nominations for Executive (2011 – 2013)
JM nominated Tom Copeland for Treasurer. (accepted)
13. Membership Welfare
Dagmar Miller: Bruce provided a brief summary of Dagmar’s condition after surgery due to breast cancer.
Rolly Davis (member of fly tying group): Jerry discussed Rolly’s loss of part of his right leg due to MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus)
George Deliman: George brought us up to date with his fight with prostrate cancer
Dan A. mentioned the passing of George Watson, a Niagara bait store owner.
Dan also mentioned that he has a pair of size 9 chest waders to donate to the club for use in our annual help with egg collection. Also, since he is our club liaison with the OFAH, anyone wishing to become a member or renew their membership in OFAH can contact Dan and receive a discount.
14. Fly tying group
Meet on Thursday evenings, starting after Thanksgiving weekend.
15. Hunting interest in SCG&F?
Greg Sarkisian, who spoke to us at our May meeting on behalf of the National Wild Turkey Federation, has returned to full time teaching so will not be initiating a hunting group within our club. The club is looking for a member to help startup a hunting interest group within the membership.
16. Local school interest?
Larry D. reported that Parnell school has applied to help in the Atlantic salmon restoration project. JM reported that he had talked to most of the schools in north St. Catharines about the Atlantic salmon project but did not receive any interest at the time.
17. Derby winners give back
Rob Faragalli and Mike Duncan have donated 10% of their derby winnings back to the club. A cheque for $75 was given today.
18. Orangeville quarry
Larry D. reported that an application for a proposed quarry near Orangeville has the potential to pollute a vast watershed due to the pumping of large amounts of water. Conservationists in the area are keeping a close eye on the process.
