Well after some early scouting I decided not to take a doe until late in the year. Watch this video on youtube to see the description/instructions below the video as it is somewhat interactive
So I headed out into the wind and rain on Oct 5th and saw nothing as expected in that weather but Oct 6th was much more ideal for deer to move around. 5 minutes from last call this guy was standing directly in front of my stand broadside and he had plenty of company.
So I hunted geese and ducks with limited success due to having no sufficient land for that and a huge no fire zone. This confined me to my kayak and days with no wind when I was off work.
I didn't and won't hunt bunnies this year. They're just not that tasty and the CN workers are calling the cops who are laying hefty fines due to some age old Federal law. Just not worth it unless you have some good brush and a better recipe.
So I said I'd take the doe late in the season. I saw the same Doe and fawn in that video with only a week left and I still let them walk. Actually the fawn saved moms life as he slipped in beside her as I was squeezing the trigger.
On Oct 30th I returned to my stand and with 15 minutes left in the day and my year, 8 big doe walked up and the lead one spotted me and stopped broadside to look.
These deer are urban deer. I took these very close (out of range) to some housing encroaching on wetland. People are feeding these deer to their death. Suet was falling out of the body cavity all the way home and when I skinned it she was pure white. The butcher was shocked to see the fat content. After removing the guts, head, feet and trimming a lot of fat she still weighed in at 95 pounds.
It was a satisfying year and the freezer is full. A buddy scored the tail of the doe but the buck skin with tail went to hats for hides. Hopefully I'll be able to make this years SCGF wild game night if we have one ;D.
Who's organizing it?
