General & Executive Meeting Minutes
Feb. 27, 2012
Present: Jerry M., Tom C., Paul P., Jason C., George D., Charlie C., John M., Dagmar M., Norm C., Chris H., Fern S.
1. Guest Speaker: Michelle Martin, MNR
- 12 Mile Creek Project
- they want to tag 4 species of fish (brook trout, brown trout, American eel, sucker) in the upper 12 Mile Creek (Short Hills Provincial Park) in order to track and study their movements, year round over a several year period
- they have 400 self-charging tags to install, which will be read by antennae located in culverts
- they will need volunteers in April or May, over a 3-4 day period in ½ day shifts
- Jerry collected the names of the members willing to help
2. 1st VP: Jason C.

- Tohatsu Outboard Motors is considering donating a motor through Pisces Marine
- Niagara Tire & Battery say they have maximized their donation budget but are reconsidering supporting us
- Big Jon: waiting to hear back from the new ownership
- Scotty: not responding to us
- Columbia: will reply by Mar. 5
- no prizes are left over for the Member’s Derby
- wait until after the Committee Meeting on Mar. 6 to finalize the flyer
- Niagara Outdoor Show will supply some merchandize
- Thundermist & Split-King: Jerry will send follow-up email, asking for support
- A-Tom-Mik has been confirmed as a sponsor
- Pure Fishing donation of 9 combos as yet unconfirmed by upper management, but we should remain hopeful
- Dreamweaver has confirmed a $500+ donation in merchandize
- Walker has confirmed a $250 donation
- other confirmed sponsors: Burns, Henrys, Peter’s Tackle, Grimsby Tackle, Marlon Marine, MC Rockets, Savant, Shur-Tow
- consideration was given to having a youth division in the derby but decision was made to leave things as they are for now
- a family membership allows a grandparent to take grandchildren in the derby
- if we do not have a members derby, should we extend the length of the spring derby?

- suggested we email CKTB radio station with our events
- contacted Rankin with date for putting docks into water
- ramp volunteers:

- George to call Angela if she wants to do a day or half-day
- clubhouse lights are being left on when clubhouse empty
- suggestion to separate weigh scale and garbage cans to improve photo environment

- Brandon DeSantis wants the Fall Derby bonus prize of $1300 to remain status quo

- Grimsby Tackle: spinning/spin cast packages; price reduction

- executive vote on club providing these prizes for Peter Lee Memorial Derby, Mar. 17th: 3 Family memberships and 1 seasonal ramp pass by draw so everyone has an opportunity to win: voted and passed

- NRPRC closure pending Regional Council meeting on Thursday, Mar. 1, 2012 @ 6:30pm, located at Niagara Regional Headquarters, 2201 St. Davids Rd., Thorold; all interested members should attend to help influence decision
- St. John’s Conservation Area asking for cash to help pay for stocked rainbow trout; since they buy their fish now, the MNR does not want to intervene by supplying fish- carry forward
6. Kids Day Derby: Dagmar M. / Jerry M.
- Bike-Fit is a no for a donation
- major donations include:
- C&J Marine: $150
- Firefighters: $200
- Mark’s No Frills: $100 merchandise
- TSCON: $$$
- Niagara Glass: $50
- Canadian Portables: Jerry negotiated $100 price decrease
- Grimsby Tackle: providing rod/reel combos @ $10, taking a loss of about $170 as his contribution
- over 120 donation requests mailed out
- TSCON will help for Kids Day: check closer to date for names
- Charlie C.: COSTCO will not help out with lower priced food; Charlie will approach another business contact for a donation

7. Pen Project: Norm C.
- put pens in water at end March or early Apr.
- wheels have been added to pens to make moving while on land easier
- no fin clipping this year in keeping with lake wide program
- Apr. 11 penciled in for fry delivery
- our fry are thriving so far
- MNR plans on more monitoring at ramps this year and is hoping for more diaries for Chinook Salmon; diaries will be ready for distribution at the Lake Ontario symposium at Niagara College on Apr. 3
- 120,000 fry destined for the Pen Projects will be distributed throughout Lake Ont. in 2012
- a student may be available to help out the club this summer
8. Tackle Share Program: Larry D. / Jerry M.
- Grantham branch is eager to start, other branches also interested
- Larry & Jerry have met with Anna (our contact)
- focus this year will be on youth 10 years of age and younger
- start in June & go until Sept.
- have a library representative at Kids Day Derby
- club will inspect hardware weekly and maintain as necessary
9. Lease committee
- the Feds want the City to take over the piers and the property
- Dave Macklem wants a status quo 5 year lease renewal until details such as funding support are addressed
- the Legion has an arrangement with condo developers to develop their property, build condos that would fund the Legion and provide them with space for their use. There is a pilot project in Meaford that will establish a template for all Legion branches going forward.
10. Balls Falls Conservation Area
- they have invited us to participate in an outdoor-focused promotion on July 8, from 11am – 3pm
- there would be no charge to participate
- there would be an opportunity to do a short presentation at a “speaker series” in the church

- possibly partner with MNR 12 Mile Creek project, library tackle share
- the executive voted on not participating this year, motion carried
11. Volunteer Recognition Dinner
- the City is hosting a volunteer recognition dinner on Apr. 17, at the Holiday Inn Parkway Convention Centre
- Jerry has nominated Dagmar for the award
- accepted nominees can attend the event, along with 1 guest for free; others can attend the dinner for $30/plate

- at the Optimist Club in NF
- a local intimate outdoors show

13. Good & Welfare Donation Policy
- our current policy is to make donations when a member dies to the charity requested by the next of kin
- some charities, including the Cancer Society, provide 50% or less of money received to research and the rest is used for administration
- should we adopt a policy to donate to charities of our choice instead, such as the Salvation Army, OFAH, or others?
- some concern was expressed about offending the next of kin by choosing an alternate charity
- one idea was expressed to obtain permission from the next of kin to donate to an alternate charity
