The Nice box boys where stoked for this event. We where out quite a bit in the previous 2 weeks and had a pretty good idea of what was going on out in the lake. We've been doing great numbers of nice mature kings on the south shore since July.
We did a little last minute prefishing. Wednesday night John and I took a cruze over to the American side of the Niagara bar. picture was good but the fish weren't moving for us. We trolled back to Canadian waters and soon after we crossed the boarder we where on a fast and furious bite. 6 Mature king bites in the next 1 1/2 hours though they didn't all come in the boat we landed a few nice low 20's fish. This had been our hot water in the previous weekends tourney where we boated 12 for 19 mature kings. It looked promising for the KOTL.
Friday morning Dave, Hunter and I went for a morning troll out front of Port Dalhousie. What a blast those 4-5footers where in my 17 footer. We started shallow and worked our way out exploring water. we popped a couple 21 pounders in 50 feet early. but the bite got pretty good for us in around 80feet. We lost a couple of monsters out there and boated 4 more teenage sized matures. We where torn as to where to fish we knew there where good fish at the bar but with the uncertain east winds approaching we weren't sure we wanted to make that run in Johns 18 foot lund. The fish we boated at Dalhousie where not really of great size and I never saw the three brutes we lost to verify there size. After some discussion amongst the team we decided the safe bet was to fish the waters close to the home port.
Day 1
Full of confidence from 2 weeks of great fishing with out a tough day to speak of we leave port with high hopes. we troll our way out to our marks from Friday and the picture looks pretty good. At least we thought. it turned out to be a tough start. almost 8:30 and not a sniff on any of the rods. we start to question whether we made the right call, Then it happens, the first rigger fires with a wonderbread DW mag. Johns on it like John on a rod. while he's fighting that fish the 200 and the 300 copper both fire with paddles and meat. Nice triple header and all fish come to the boat. Things are looking up. we are all feeling a little relieved. But all goes quiet once again with the exception of a couple of brown trout. until 10:00 when we bang another double which John ad Hunter also fight flawlessly. both fish in the boat. we finally had our box. Now with 2 -23 1-21 1-18 1- 15 we had some upgrading to do. We did not want to go in with the 2 teenagers but it wouldn't happen on this day. Not another rod fired after the East wind rolled in shortly after 10. We would finish the day in 11th spot with a box of 100. 89 pounds.
Day 2
Dissapointed that we didn't make the top 10 on day 1 we knew we had to work extra hard for our fish today. the race was close after day 1 and we really thought we could climb in to a money spot. We start our troll a little shallower today figuring that the east winds may have pushed some of the fish in. The water was very different today. Much colder than in the days previous. we liked the looks of the inside water even though we didn't get a bite on the way out. Thought we might like to go work it a little longer but figured we should check out our previous way points first. As soon as we get to our marks the first rod goes. and we get him in the box shortly after on our east troll we double up in 70fow. we boat one and loose one. After a slight lull our Spinny meat wire diver gets slammed and that fish comes in the boat. then the spinny fly diver rips and fish number 4 is boated. This is where it gets interesting. We work our marks hard turning back and pounding this pod of fish over and over. fish number 5 will prove hard to capture though. the 300 copper fires and the drag is locked, fish breaks off at the liter, the diver gets slammed peels 50 feet and gone. The other diver rips again drag to tight and the rod gets stuck in the holder and breaks off again. Then around 11:00 all went quiet. today we won't take no for an answer though. We pull our Meat program which has been just stellar in the previous weeks and put out all Spinny flys. We up our speed to just over 3 mph to cover water and find some active fish. It pays off. 1:20pm old trusty Net pen spindoctor and a white fly start peeling on the diver. John grabs the rod but won't fight the fish Dave refuses and Hunter hides in the front of the boat. So "F" it I take the rod and baby I brought that fish home. 5 for 10 on the day. We got our box and went for weigh in. 95Lbs. 5-19 pound twins. Not the biggest box but we where consistent both days and it was good enough for 7th place. Our second tourney of the year in the money and our first top 10 in a king of the Lake. Tough bit this weekend but there where a lot of great anglers that manage to put it all together.
