St. Catharines Game & Fish Association
General Meeting Minutes
Sept. 23, 2013
Present: Jerry M., Paul P., Charlie C., Mary S., John M., Dagmar M., Norm C., Bruce M., Mark P., Fern S.
1. Jerry announced the passing of Ross MacSporran, a long time member of our club. Ross was an outdoors enthusiast and tried to teach about the outdoors to everyone he contacted. The club will make a contribution of $100 to Ducks Unlimited in Ross’s name.
2. Tom Copeland continues to struggle with his recovery from cancer surgery. He has recently been diagnosed with double pneumonia. Paul has been maintaining payments due and deposits from the ramp. We have delayed payment of the ramp volunteers since Tom still has most of the required paperwork in his briefcase at home. Jerry will visit Diane in the next few weeks to obtain the paperwork to pay the volunteers as well as be able to determine the Fall Derby payout.
3. The executive have postponed the elections until Tom’s health improves or until a decision is made to “move on”. The current executive will continue on a month to month basis.
4. The club has a working balance of about $50,000, after all known expenses are paid. Jerry will investigate the possibility and terms of a partnership with the OFHA to provide postgraduate awards over several years; possible $1000 or $2000 a year.
5. Thank you to the ramp volunteers for another successful year. We have decided to maintain the same ramp fees for the 2014 season. We would like a few more volunteers to help next year. Bruce will contact Gilbert to set a date for the removal of the docks. Bruce suggested leaving dock 1 in the water this winter in order to look at the wood from dock 4 which has been in the water for 2 winters in a row.
6. The 2014 Kids Day Derby will be the 20th and Dagmar’s last. Anyone interested in helping with the organizing and fund raising can contact Dagmar.
7. Larry and Jerry have tended to the needs of our Tackle Share program at 2 branches of the St. Catharines’ library. The club would like to hold a garage sale in the spring to raise funds for the program.
8. The club is looking for volunteers to run the fishing derbies for 2014. This year the club needed to subsidize the Member’s Derby by more than $1,000; and the Fall Derby sold more tickets than the Member’s Derby.
9. Our pen imprinting site is the best on Lake Ontario, as per Andy Todd, the Lake Ontario Manager. We imprint 30,000 fry or 23% of the total. Thank you to those that participated in the Chinook diary program. We need more volunteers for 2014.
Egg collection on the Credit River will begin in Oct. Jerry will be going on Friday Oct. 4th. He has room for 5 passengers. If you choose to go on another day, our club will provide a fuel allowance if there are a minimum 3 car pooling. Everyone needs approval to enter the site and must be pre-registered. Jerry has contact info.
10. There will be no General Meeting in October, in order to give the executive more time to deal with the issues already identified.
11. Member’s Derby prizes were handed out, including drawn prizes for unclaimed brown trout and the bonus draw for a downrigger.
