Game and Fish Newsletter June 2008
Here is our 2nd installment of the year. Cold water and colder temperatures have certainly had an effect this spring. Migrations, spawning, blossoms, are all 2 weeks behind this year. The weather has certainly affected club activities.
Kids Day 2008, May 3rd.
A lot of effort went into this 14th. running of the event. Each may the club tries to bring some outdoor fun and fresh air to the youth in our communities. With the help of several volunteers and sponsors the SCG&F provides a free day of activity for the children.
Despite cooler temperature and rain the children still came out to fish. The cold front also affected the bite and only 21 fish were caught and weighed. The winners were:
Overall- Jeshua Vanstralen (age 11) with a 59cm. Rainbow
Venessa Cassie (age 5) 21cm. Rainbow
Ashley Desimone (age 10) 40cm. Rainbow
Glen Pendlebury (age 12) 39cm. Sucker
Congratulations to all the participants and prize winners.
Although there were doubts and rumours as to the event’s financial survival and future, the community came forward, with a groundswell of support, to back this great event. 400 youth registered for the day despite the weather. Over 60 volunteers came out to run the event. Over 50 businesses and sponsors offered funds, goods, or services in support of Kids Day. Area fire, police, MNR, Customs, and GAMRU units were on hand to educate and inform.
Certain special "Thank You’s are also in order. A number of long standing partners are there for the children year after year: Peter’s Tackle, Worm Wanch, Baron Roofing, Metro Collision and Niagara Trailers. Of course, a special "Thanks to the Grand Dame herself, Dagmar Miller. A woman who has thrown herself , unselfishly, into organizing this event year after year.
Not the least of all, "THANK YOU to all in the community who have helped to make this event a success. Planning is already in the works for next year’s event.
Paul Groves, 2nd. Vice President:
2 of the docks were completely refurbished in time for the start of the spring derby. Despite colder water conditions, the ramp has seen a high volume of traffic. Thanks to Fern, both Bills, the 2 Jerry’s, George, Don, Tom, the 2 Bruce’s and any one else I may have missed. The ramp has been manned every day.
Secretary:
At times things move at a snail"s pace. At other times events overtake us.
OFAH- The long awaited fall Turkey hunt has been approved.
- The OFAH supported Animal Cruelty bill S-203 has finally become law.
- The Middle Island Cormorant cull on L. Erie has received a go ahead from the courts.
Other events- The SCG&F participated at the Niagara Outdoor Show on April 6th.
- A flea market was held at the club April 19th. Not a roaring success, but some
Valuable lessons were learned. The need for better advertising and a better choice of
dates topped the list.
Membership: It is with sadness that we mark the passing of the following long time members:
Albert Mason
John Livingston
John Yuell
FALL SALMON DERBY
Saturday, Aug. 16th.- Oct. 11th. 2008
This is a salmon only derby. Cash percentage paid out from ticket sales plus prizes.
There is also a $1300 Bonus Bounty to be paid on the first salmon weighing in over 35lbs.
Monday Aug. 18th. is the date set for the summer BBQ. More details will follow. For information please contact Dawn Furrier. 905-685-6042
To date, efforts to attract new members have met with little success. At present, we would like to run a wider variety of programs, activities or involvements. This club once did many great things and attracted members, and must do so again.
The world is changing. Many new problems and issues have arisen which require the attention and actions of all anglers. Pollution, invasive species, poaching and governmental indifference all have a negative effect on the outdoors we love and cherish. Animal rights extremists would like to see our heritage banned. There are also numerous positive programs which can enhance our outdoor heritage and protect the resources. At present, many of our volunteers are getting on in years, and can no longer take on new challenges.
New members, young blood, is what this club needs to meet these challenges. To the public out there we say this. It is YOUR resource and heritage that is in jeopardy. Only YOU can ensure the future of hunting and fishing. If you can get involved, participate, help us to build a better foundation, YOU CAN, and YOU WILL make a difference for the benefit of all.
We are the Stewards of our outdoor heritage, now, and for future generations. It is up
to us to use it wisely or lose it for the future.
